how much warmer the layer top is than its base. The dial the whole file argues about: the balloons said one or two degrees; the textbook trap wants more.

Layer base…

height of the inversion's floor. Low layers over a warm river valley are July-in-Washington weather.

Layer thickness…

thin and sharp bends hardest per metre. Radiosondes of 1952 could step right over a layer like that: the honest escape hatch both sides use.

Dry cap…

moisture collapsing across the layer top. Humidity is the secret heavyweight in refractivity: a dry cap steepens the gradient far more than warmth alone.

Layer wobble…

the duct breathing. This is what makes ghosts crawl, fade and jump between sweeps instead of parking.

What is reported vs measured vs modelled

Reported: the controllers' and pilots' accounts: the crawls, the correlations, the lights, the fade before the jets. Measured: the radar hardware, the era's soundings (weak inversions), the 29 July press conference. Modelled: refractivity, ray bending, ghost placement and the sweep-to-sweep speed arithmetic: exact, from stated dials. Reading: what the blips were. This instrument takes no side.

Where this drawing takes liberties

The city is a stylised night map: real bearings and ranges for the clutter, simplified buildings. The radar is a generic early-50s search set at ten seconds a sweep, not a serial-numbered unit. "Barnes's night" animates testimony, not physics, and is tagged so. The atmosphere dials are honest: every ray and every ghost follows the profile exactly; nothing on the scope is placed by hand.
