This site collects as little about you as possible.
No accounts, no tracking
There are no user accounts or logins, no tracking cookies, and no profile is built of you.
Analytics
The site counts visits in two ways. Netlify Analytics runs on the host's servers from the request logs and needs nothing on the page. Umami, a small open-source counter, runs as a script that the page loads from Umami's servers (cloud.umami.is) and reports back to them (gateway.umami.is): the address of the page, the page you came from, your browser and device type, screen size and language. The country is worked out from your IP address on their side, and the address itself is not kept. Neither service uses cookies, collects personal data, builds a profile of you, or follows you across other sites. If your browser blocks counting scripts, the count simply does not happen and the site works exactly the same.
Netlify, which hosts the site, also measures how quickly pages load in your browser (load and response timings, the page address, your browser and device type) so we can keep the site fast. It sets no cookies and is not used to identify you.
Video embeds
Every video clip on the site shows only a YouTube thumbnail until you press play. Only then does the player load, from YouTube's privacy-enhanced domain (youtube-nocookie.com). From that moment, what happens inside the player is covered by YouTube's own privacy policy.
Third parties your browser contacts
Article and index pages fetch the still image for a video clip from YouTube's image host. That request tells YouTube your IP address, your browser and device type, your language, this site's address and which clip's image it is. Apart from it, the Netlify speed measurement and the Umami counter above, everything a page needs (the fonts, the styles, the scripts, the audio, and the graphics libraries behind the 3D instruments and the wiki's map of connections) comes from this site's own domain.
The subscribe link points at YouTube and the follow link at X. They open only when you click, and nothing loads from either service before that. Neither address carries a tag.
Stored on your device
The site sets no cookies. A few small settings are kept in your browser's own storage, on your device, and are never sent anywhere:
- the time the homepage last played its opening animation, so it does not replay if you come back within the half hour. This is the only one written without you doing anything;
- your choice of light, dark or automatic theme;
- whether you switched an article into reading view;
- that you closed the small card inviting you to subscribe, so it stays closed;
- on a phone or tablet, that you dismissed the note saying the instrument pages work better on a desktop. That one lasts only until you close the tab.
Apart from the first, all of them are written only after you act. Clearing your browser's site data removes them, and the site works normally without them.
Server logs
Like any site, the host keeps standard server logs (including your IP address) for security and basic operation; they are not used to identify or track individual readers.
Contact email
Your message sits in the Gmail inbox, used only to reply; your address is never shared or added to any list.
