What distinguishes the work
He commissioned structured-light and CT scanning of specific vessels, published the raw scan data as well as the conclusions, and invited replication. That is a different posture from most of the ancient-technology genre, which argues from photographs and from incredulity, and it is the reason Egyptologists have engaged with this argument more than with its predecessors, even where they reject it.
Where it is vulnerable
Sample selection. The vessels chosen are the best in enormous collections, and the argument needs them to be representative rather than exceptional; nobody has yet measured a random sample to the same standard. He appears frequently alongside Christopher Dunn, whose The Giza Power Plant opened the manufacturing question in 1998, and the two arguments should be kept apart: the vases claim is about metrology and can be settled by measurement, while the power plant is a machine with no quantified component.
