Normalisation as the subject
The engine is not the ship, it is how fast a ship over Tokyo becomes ordinary. Pundits argue it on morning television, brands sell merchandise of it, a fringe insists it was never there. That is the texture of the disclosure era rather than the thunderclap most people expected: the December 2017 press disclosure of a Pentagon UAP programme, the ODNI Preliminary Assessment 2021 that could explain one of 144 incidents, and David Grusch before Congress in July 2023 were each briefly the biggest story in the world, and then the commute resumed. Asano sketched that reflex in 2014.
The silence, and the refusal of the Reagan reading
For most of its length the invaders do almost nothing: no announcement, no demands, occasionally lethal almost by accident, opaque as to intent. People project onto the blank and the projection becomes the story, which is the actual condition of the record rather than the comforting version of it. The Reagan UN Address 1987 imagined that an outside threat would dissolve our differences; this story is the systematic refutation of that hope. The state uses the ship to justify rearmament and surveillance, the emergency never ends, and the catastrophe when it detonates is overwhelmingly our own work.
What it is not
