Name coined by Fiona Broome around 2009 for widely shared false memories, such as remembering Nelson Mandela dying in prison. The standard account is memory confabulation reinforced socially. In Closer Encounters the effect is read literally: shared “wrong” memories become residue of a timeline edited by time travellers, one of several phenomena (Missing 411, out-of-place artifacts) the book converts into evidence for revision of the past.
