The Linda Cortile case, centrepiece of Budd Hopkins’ Witnessed (1996). At around 3 am on 30 November 1989, Cortile was reportedly floated from her twelfth-floor Manhattan window into a craft that dove into the East River, allegedly seen by security men attached to a stalled VIP motorcade and by motorist Janet Kimball on the Brooklyn Bridge. When Cortile protested “You have no right to do this to me!”, her abductors reportedly answered, “We do have a right.” Independent-witness claims made it the flagship abduction case of the 1990s; sceptics dispute the witnesses’ provenance.
