American clairvoyant who gave many thousands of readings in a self-induced trance state, most of them medical, and who founded the Association for Research and Enlightenment at Virginia Beach in 1931. The readings were transcribed as he gave them and are archived, which makes him unusually checkable for a figure of this kind.
The Hall of Records
A subset of the readings describes Atlantis, its destruction, and the flight of survivors to Egypt, and states that a chamber holding the records of that civilisation lies beneath the Great Sphinx, near the right paw, to be opened at the end of the twentieth century. That is the origin of the entire Hall of Records tradition, which is why it recurs in books that never mention Cayce: it is upstream of Fingerprints of the Gods, of the Schor expedition work at Giza in the 1990s, and of the closing chapters of The Giza Power Plant, where Christopher Dunn reaches for Cayce directly.
What has been found
Nothing of the kind. The 1991 Sphinx Seismic Survey located a rectangular low-velocity anomaly under the left paw, roughly twelve metres by nine, which is a different location and has never been drilled; ground-penetrating radar in front of the Sphinx Temple in 2019 found what the surveyors read as quarried levelling blocks. The prediction had a date attached and the date passed.
