The claim that a technologically advanced civilisation preceded the known archaeological record, was destroyed, and left works later misattributed to the cultures found sitting on them. It is the parent motif under a large part of the alternative literature: Dunn’s Giza Power Plant Theory, Hancock’s Fingerprints of the Gods, Hapgood’s crust displacement, the Piri Reis reading, and the Younger Dryas impact as a destruction mechanism. It differs from Breakaway Civilization in direction of time — a lost antecedent rather than a contemporary splinter — and overlaps Proto-Ancient Human Hypothesis, which places the same idea inside a taxonomy of non-human intelligence. The strongest counter is not any single refutation but accumulation: contemporary administrative evidence for the projects the hypothesis says could not have been built, such as the Wadi al-Jarf logbooks and the Heit el-Ghurab workers’ town at Giza.
