British journal founded in 1955, for three decades the most serious periodical the subject had in English, and the place where a large part of the European case record was first published. Its editors included Charles Bowen and, from the early 1980s, Gordon Creighton.
Why it is in the file
It carried Aime Michel’s reports on the Dr. X Case 1968 and the follow-ups that Jacques Vallee works from in The Invisible College, and much of the French and South American material that never reached American publication. For researchers on this side of the Atlantic it is often the only printed source for a case, which makes its editorial standards part of the evidence.
The turn
Under Creighton the journal moved steadily toward a demonological reading of the phenomenon and away from the physical-case reporting that had made it useful, and its circulation and standing fell with it. Both halves of that history matter when a modern citation runs back to an issue of this magazine.
