French astronomer and computer scientist, born 24 September 1939 at Pontoise, and the theorist whose vocabulary most of the field still argues in. A mathematics degree at the Sorbonne and an astrophysics degree at Lille were followed by a doctorate at Northwestern in 1967, taken while he worked alongside J. Allen Hynek with access to the Project Blue Book files and with his own European sighting catalogues brought from France. He is the model for Lacombe in Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

The parallel career is substantial and is part of why the theoretical work reads the way it does. He co-developed the first computer-based map of Mars at the University of Texas, worked at Douglas Engelbart’s Augmentation Research Center, ran computer-conferencing research on the ARPANET at the Institute for the Future, and has spent four decades in venture capital. In January 1975 he and Claude Poher presented “Basic Patterns in UFO Observations” to the AIAA’s 13th Aerospace Sciences Meeting, one of the earliest statistical treatments of sighting data.

The theoretical arc runs from Anatomy of a Phenomenon (1965) through Passport to Magonia (1969), which introduced Magonia as the folklore frame, to The Invisible College (1975), where the Control System Hypothesis is first stated in full. The seven volumes of the Forbidden Science journals, the last published in 2026, carry the same position to the end, including his late reading of the disclosure movement as a further layer of the Triple Coverup. The final volume of the journals has its own entry at Forbidden Science 7.
