Senior forensic artist with the New York Police Department, who in 1993 accepted John Anthony West’s invitation to compare the face of the Great Sphinx with the diorite statue of Khafre using the identification methods he used in casework.
What he concluded
That the two faces are not the same individual: the frontal proportions, the angle of the facial plane in profile and the position of the features differ beyond what erosion and recarving would account for. He produced comparative drawings and stated the conclusion in the terms a courtroom would expect, which is what made it useful to the redating argument.
What happened next
A German forensic group reached the opposite result in 1999, working from the same monument. Origins of the Sphinx prints both and then offers a joke about experts being wrong rather than a reason to prefer either study, which is the weakest passage in its fourth chapter. The face question is in any case not load-bearing for the redating: both sides of that argument accept the head is a dynastic recarving, so whose face it is changes nothing about the age of the body.
