The line the review borrows
Writing in 2000, he observed that “very often in our discipline, old and seemingly certain statements rest forever without further verification.” Origins of the Sphinx quotes him beside Breasted’s “a conclusion which does not follow” to show that the doubt about the attribution is not confined to lost-civilisation writers.
