December 1978, off Kaikoura, New Zealand. Lights paced an Argosy freight aircraft; Wellington air traffic controller John Cordy tracked solid radar returns for some 40 miles while a television crew filmed from the aircraft, with reporter Quentin Fogarty’s in-flight commentary. The RNZAF attributed the events to squid-boat lights, a refracted Venus and radar anomalies, stating all witnesses were interviewed; Cordy and the journalists aboard say they never were. A staple radar-visual case in In Plain Sight.
