Series of eighteen apparitions reported by the fourteen-year-old Bernadette Soubirous at the Massabielle grotto near Lourdes in southern France between February and July 1858, witnessed by crowds who saw nothing themselves but observed her.
Why it is in the UFO file
The Invisible College sets the Marian record beside landing cases from Magonia deliberately, on a definition stated late in the same chapter: a miracle is any event, real, imagined or faked, that creates verifiable paranormal effects. That definition buys the whole of religious history as data, and it costs the Control System Hypothesis the ability to lose, which is the book’s central strength and its central weakness at once.
The medical exhibit
The strongest item Jacques Vallee takes from Lourdes is not a vision but a measurement: Dr Douzous timing a candle flame held under Bernadette’s hand for fifteen minutes and finding no burn afterwards, with the physician’s own account of the test. It sits with the Pierre de Rudder Case 1875 as the part of the Marian record that was examined by named physicians and written up at the time.
