British physicist at the University of Portsmouth working on information physics, and the author of the mass-energy-information equivalence principle, published in AIP Advances in 2019.
What he proposes
That a bit of stored information has a small but finite rest mass, that this yields a testable prediction, and, in later work, an “information catastrophe” in which the mass of accumulated digital data becomes cosmologically significant at current growth rates. He has also proposed a second law of infodynamics and suggested experimental tests, including one based on electron-positron annihilation.
Its standing
Published is not established, and this is the clearest case in the vault of the difference. The work has passed peer review at a real journal and has attracted serious criticism; no experiment has confirmed the mass of a bit, and the proposed tests have not returned a positive result. The Jorjani - Danny Jones Podcast 2025 interview cites Vopson accurately as a real published hypothesis and then goes considerably further than he does, to the identity of information mass with dark matter, which is not Vopson’s claim.
