American theoretical physicist, a central figure of twentieth-century relativity and quantum theory, teacher of Feynman and of a generation after him, and the man who put the words black hole, wormhole and quantum foam into the language.
It from bit
In work from 1989 onward Wheeler proposed that information is not a description of physical reality but its origin: that every item of the physical world derives its existence from apparatus-elicited answers to yes-or-no questions, which he compressed into the phrase “it from bit”. He paired it with the participatory universe, in which the act of observation is constitutive rather than passive, and with the delayed-choice experiment, which he devised and which was later performed.
What the simulation literature does with him
It quotes him constantly, and it is entitled to: he is the most distinguished physicist to have proposed that information is fundamental. What the literature usually leaves out is that “it from bit” is a research programme with no accepted formalism behind it, that Wheeler offered it as a question rather than a result, and that nothing in it requires a computer or a programmer.
