The set of standing electromagnetic waves in the cavity between the Earth’s surface and the lower ionosphere, with a fundamental near 7.83 hertz and harmonics above it. Winfried Otto Schumann predicted them in 1952 and they were first measured later that decade; they are excited mainly by global lightning activity, and they are measured continuously today. The measurement is solid and uncontroversial; what it will not carry on its own is the enormous borrowing it has attracted in consciousness, wellness and free-energy literature, where the 7.83 figure is treated as a biological or spiritual constant.
