Egyptian archaeologist, long the controlling authority over work on the Giza plateau and later Minister of State for Antiquities. He is the permission side of every test the Great Sphinx dispute says it wants, which is why he appears in the argument as often as any geologist.
The 1980 cores
Drill cores from his 1980 work east of the temples hit a twelve-metre drop in the bedrock with fragments of Aswan granite at the bottom. That is the buried cliff the 1991 Sphinx Seismic Survey mapped eleven years later, and Origins of the Sphinx reports the seismic result without the earlier cores.
The unpublished holes
Holes have gone into the enclosure floor over the decades for conservation and groundwater testing, and by the excavators’ own account in 2024 most of what came out of them is unpublished. He worked with Mark Lehner and the Glen Dash Foundation on the 2019 radar survey and on “The Return to the Sphinx Viewing Project”, printed in the same 2024 issue of AERAGRAM.
