International mission launched in October 2015 under Cairo University and the HIP Institute to survey the Old Kingdom pyramids non-invasively, using muon radiography, infrared thermography and photogrammetry rather than drills.

What it found

In November 2017 the team published in Nature the detection of a large void above the Grand Gallery of the Great Pyramid of Giza, at least thirty metres long, from three independent muon detector technologies. In 2023 a second paper in Nature Communications confirmed a corridor of about nine metres behind the chevron blocks on the north face, and an endoscope was later passed into it.

What it means and does not mean

It is the most significant new fact about the interior of the Great Pyramid in a century, and it was produced by particle physics rather than by excavation. Nothing imaged so far has any machine-like character, and the voids bear no relation to the components specified in Giza Power Plant Theory; The Giza Power Plant was written before the survey and predicted different things in different places. The alternative literature has welcomed the discovery, which is fair, and has not yet been able to use it, which is also fair.
