The proposal that the Moon is hollow, or artificial, or both. In its best-known form it comes from Mikhail Vasin and Alexander Shcherbakov, who published the spaceship Moon idea in a Soviet magazine in 1970.
The evidence it runs on
Three items, and all three are real observations. The Apollo 12 and 13 seismic experiments recorded the Moon ringing after spent stages were deliberately crashed into it, in one case for the better part of an hour, which NASA scientists at the time described in exactly those terms. The Moon’s apparent size matches the Sun’s closely enough to produce total eclipses. And the orbit is unusually stable for a body of that mass relative to its primary.
What the observations actually say
The ringing is a consequence of the Moon being dry, cold and heavily fractured to considerable depth: seismic energy scatters through the megaregolith with very little attenuation, because there is no water to damp it. The same experiments constrain the interior directly, and the moment of inertia derived from them and from later tracking is that of a body with a small dense core and a thick solid mantle, not a shell. The eclipse coincidence is a coincidence of the present epoch, since the Moon is receding.
