A region of the northern plains of Mars, photographed by Viking 1 in July 1976. One frame showed a mesa about two kilometres across, lit at a low sun angle in a way that read as a human face, and through the 1980s and 1990s it was argued to be an artificial monument with an adjacent group of “pyramids” and a “city”. Zecharia Sitchin’s October 1989 Frankfurt lecture used it as a reactivated way station from which robot-crewed scout craft operated, which is the point at which his scenario touches the modern UFO phenomenon directly. Mars Global Surveyor imaged the region at high resolution in April 1998 and again in 2001, Mars Odyssey and Mars Express followed, and the mesa resolves as an ordinary landform: the face does not survive the resolution. It is one of very few scored, dated and falsified predictions anywhere in this literature, alongside the Djedi Project, and it is worth keeping for that reason rather than for the claim.
