SS-Gruppenfuhrer and police general, one of Lower Silesia’s plenipotentiaries for the evacuation of high-grade technology, documents and personnel ahead of the Red Army. Captured by the British in May 1945 and handed to Poland, he was tried, sentenced to death in 1952 and executed. He is the single human source for the Die Glocke story: while in Polish custody he testified in secret about a top secret SS project in a mine near Ludwigsdorf and about his part in the murder of sixty-two scientists and laboratory workers attached to it.
The evidentiary weight of that testimony is limited by what he was. Sporrenberg was a policeman and an administrator with no technical training, describing physics he could not have understood, under sentence of death. Igor Witkowski says he was shown the files; nobody else has seen them.
