What he adds to Bostrom

Three things, all of them analogies rather than arguments, and all of them better than they need to be. The eleven-stage roadmap from text adventures to downloadable consciousness turns a philosophical possibility into a checklist with a progress bar and a date, which he puts between 2049 and 2075. The Metaverse Turing Test asks whether you could tell an AI-driven avatar from a human one inside a 3D world, with the corollary that if it will ever be passed it has probably already been passed. And the rendering rule, only render that which is being observed, sets the rule of a game engine beside the rule of quantum indeterminacy and asks whether they are the same rule.

Where the reviewer’s guard goes up

The book’s signature move is escalation: game rendering corresponds to quantum indeterminacy, then the evidence points to simulation, then by the karma chapter it may only be possible in a simulated world. The analogies are consistently brilliant; the escalation from analogy to ontology does more work than the evidence licenses, and the strongest claims land furthest from the physics. Virk puts his own odds at about seventy percent and is honest that no single experiment settles it.
