Elizabethan mathematician, navigator and astrologer, adviser to Elizabeth I, owner of the largest private library in England, and from 1582 the recorder of a series of scrying sessions conducted with the medium Edward Kelley, in which entities identified as angels dictated an elaborate language and a system of tables and calls now known as Enochian. Dee’s scientific work and his angelic conversations were, to him, the same project. The diaries survive and were published in the seventeenth century, which makes this one of the best documented contact claims in the Western record and the template that later ceremonial magic, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn above all, built on. He enters the UAP literature through that lineage rather than through anything aerial, as the standing example of a credentialed natural philosopher who treated dictation from nonhuman intelligences as a research programme, and Heather Lynn uses him as the historical precedent for contact reached through consciousness rather than encounter.
