A July 1955 incident in which a U.S. Air Force KC-97 flying near Newfoundland, Canada, encountered an object producing simultaneous ground radar returns and aircrew visual sightings. A USAF committee found the described characteristics inconsistent with known Soviet, American or Canadian military systems, and was “unable to explain” the dual detection.
The correspondence sits inside PURSUE Release 04 record DOW-UAP-D095, a file otherwise devoted to explaining saucer reports via Avro Project Y2 VTOL confusion; the committee’s leftover case is the exception within it.
