A conference held at 1300 on 16 February 1949 in room P-162, Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, New Mexico, convened to gather hypotheses on the Green Fireballs reported around the laboratory for months. Attendees included Manhattan Project veterans. The transcript is public as PURSUE Release 04 record DOE-UAP-D004, the first Department of Energy record in the archive; the database’s 22 March 1949 date belongs to the AEC letter transmitting the minutes to AFSWP headquarters at Sandia Base.
The group reached no consensus. The leading hypothesis was shallow-angle, high-altitude meteors; Edward Teller suggested an “electron phenomenon” if no material body was involved, while Lincoln LaPaz held that the observations matched no known meteorite behaviour.
