A reading of the phenomenon in which deception, boundary-blurring and the collapse of categories are treated as intrinsic features rather than obstacles to study. Its modern statement is George P. Hansen’s The Trickster and the Paranormal (2001), with antecedents in Charles Fort’s Dominants and John Keel’s ultraterrestrials. Jason Reza Jorjani’s Closer Encounters takes it furthest, assigning the orbs, owls, mantids, Men In Black and the whole Skinwalker repertoire to a precognitive shape-shifting super-organism, distinct from and adversarial to the Breakaway Civilization. The reading’s practical consequence is uncomfortable: if the phenomenon deceives by nature, no amount of better instrumentation settles it, and clean data may be the least likely outcome.
