An alleged occult circle in pre-war Germany, said to have consisted of mediums who received technical plans for flying craft from beings in the Aldebaran system, and to have supplied the esoteric basis for Nazi flying-disc programmes such as Die Glocke. No wartime documentation of such a group has been produced. The name comes from Edward Bulwer-Lytton’s 1871 novel The Coming Race, in which vril is an all-purpose energy wielded by a subterranean people, and the society as now described is traceable to post-war writing, principally Pauwels and Bergier’s The Morning of the Magicians (1960) and a body of German material from the 1990s onward. It is worth an entry not because the claim is live but because it recurs constantly in ancient astronaut and secret-technology writing, including in the correspondence quoted in Heather Lynn’s book, and because its provenance is unusually easy to trace to a specific publication date.
