First Lieutenant Walter Haut, public information officer of the 509th Bomb Group, who wrote and distributed the press release of 8 July 1947 announcing that the field had come into possession of a flying disc. He later founded the International UFO Museum and Research Center in Roswell and gave interviews for decades in which he said he had simply passed on what he was told and had seen nothing himself.
In 2002 he signed a sealed affidavit to be opened after his death, and it was released after he died in 2005. In it he describes being shown a craft and bodies in a hangar. The two accounts cannot both be complete, and the affidavit’s provenance and drafting have been questioned by researchers on both sides of the case. It is one of the few items in the Roswell record where a single witness’s own dated statements can be set against each other.
