Project Hail Mary: First Contact, Conducted Entirely in Physics [Spoilers].

Andy Weir's 2021 novel gives itself one impossible thing, a microbe that eats stars, and then pays full price for every consequence. What starts as an extinction thriller becomes the best first-contact story of its decade: two sole survivors with no shared sense, no shared air and no shared words, building a language out of the only thing two minds must have in common. THE BOOK

Project Hail Mary, by Andy Weir, Ballantine Books, New York, 2021; Penguin Books UK paperback, 2022, the edition read for this review. Thirty chapters, 476 pages, no part divisions. Weir’s third novel, after The Martian (2011) and Artemis (2017). A film adaptation directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, with Ryan Gosling as Grace and Sandra Hüller as Stratt, reached cinemas in March 2026, which is the occasion for finally writing this one up.

Spoiler warning: this review discusses the amnesia reveal, the second half of the plot, and the ending.

A flat, patient voice asks a man “What’s two plus two?” until he manages to answer. He wakes in an oval bed, wired to tubes, with two mummified corpses for roommates and no memory of his own name. He notices that falling objects feel wrong, so he tapes together a stopwatch and a test tube, times a 91-centimetre drop twenty times, and computes a local gravity of 15 metres per second squared instead of 9.8. Then he builds a pendulum from nylon thread, counts 346 cycles at two different heights, rules out a centrifuge, and concludes, on page nineteen, that he is not on Earth. That opening is a promise about how everything in this book will be earned, and the book keeps it. There are no briefings from mission control, no convenient databanks, no one to tell him anything. There is a man, a laboratory, and the fact that the physical constants are the same everywhere. It turns out that is enough, and watching it be enough is the pleasure the novel is built to deliver, page after page, for four hundred and seventy-six of them.

The premise is an extinction clock. A microbe, eventually named Astrophage, is feeding on the sun and breeding at Venus, dimming our star along an exponential curve; the climatologists’ arithmetic gives humanity about nineteen years before half of everyone now alive is dead, and the wars over what food remains are expected to be worse than the cold. Every nearby star shows the same infection except one: Tau Ceti, sitting untouched in the middle of the infected cluster. So Earth builds a ship, fuels it with two million kilograms of the enemy, and sends three people on a one-way trip to find out what Tau Ceti knows. The man in the oval bed is the mission’s science specialist, Dr. Ryland Grace, a molecular biologist who left research after a heresy about water-based life ended his academic career, and who has spent the years since teaching junior high school science, happily. How a middle-school teacher ends up alone at another star is the question the book’s second timeline exists to answer, and the answer is nastier than he remembers.

Because the amnesia is the novel’s best formal trick, and it is not the trick it appears to be. The chapters alternate between the present tense aboard the Hail Mary and recovered memories running from the discovery of the Petrova line to the launch. Within a hundred pages the reader knows roughly what the mission is; the flashbacks are not withholding plot. What they are withholding is character. In chapter 23, with the ship crippled and the cure failing, the last memory lands: Grace refused the mission. He hid behind his students, and Eva Stratt, the administrator with total legal immunity who runs the project like a benevolent dictatorship, called him a coward to his face, had him sedated, and loaded him aboard, with the amnesia administered deliberately so that he would wake up too invested to sulk. “I’m not some intrepid explorer who nobly sacrificed his life to save Earth,” he realises. “I’m a terrified man who had to be literally dragged kicking and screaming onto the mission.” The novel spends four hundred pages letting you like a man, then tells you he is not who you thought, then gives him fifty pages to become that man by choice. The plot device and the character arc are the same mechanism, and the placement is exact.

On method, Weir plays a game with strict rules, and the discipline is the point. He allows himself exactly one impossible thing: Astrophage stores energy at mass-conversion densities, a cell that turns heat into neutrinos and back. Everything downstream of the miracle is charged at full price. The ship’s drive emits 540 trillion watts, so it cannot be run near a planet without setting the sky on fire, and the plot obeys. Relativity is not decoration but load-bearing twice over: the thirteen-year signal lag each way is what makes the ending ache, and the alien ship’s enormous fuel surplus, the surplus that saves Grace’s life, exists precisely because Eridian science never discovered time dilation and over-provisioned for a Newtonian voyage. That is the most elegant structural move I have seen in hard science fiction in years: a civilisation’s scientific blind spot, derived honestly from its planet’s physics, arriving in the story as an act of grace. And the reasoning set pieces keep coming. A sheet of aluminium held between the narrator and the alien, blocking all light and passing all sound, settles in one gesture that his counterpart perceives by sonar. Dead spin drives are turned into a radar transmitter with the Petrova-frequency telescope as receiver, sweeping 900 terawatts across twenty million kilometres of error bar to find one derelict ship. Best of all is the explanation, late in the book, of why an amoeba can escape a container that a nitrogen atom cannot: to a molecule, a solid is not a wall but a jungle, and a tennis ball fired into a jungle stops at the first trees, while a thing that senses and intends can walk all the way through. I have not encountered a better paragraph of science writing in a novel, and it is doing plot work at the time.

Then there is Rocky, and Rocky is the reason this book will outlive its decade. Forty light-days out from Tau Ceti, Grace finds another ship, three times the size of his, hull built of flat panels no pressure-vessel engineer would tolerate. Inside is the mission’s mirror image: the sole survivor of a crew of twenty-three from 40 Eridani, whose star is dying of the same infection, whose crewmates died of radiation their science had never discovered because their planet’s magnetic field and twenty-nine-atmosphere air had shielded their whole evolutionary history from it. The Eridian is a five-armed, eyeless creature the size of a Labrador who perceives by passive sonar, speaks in chords, counts in base six, lives at 210 degrees Celsius, and remembers everything perfectly. First contact is conducted the only way it honestly could be: in physics. They exchange atomic models made of beads to describe their atmospheres. They establish the second by timing each other’s clocks, the kilogram by a ball of element 26, yes and no by jazz hands and knocked fists. A laptop running a Fourier transform turns chords into a dictionary. And across weeks of shared work the book quietly assembles the least sentimental and most convincing friendship in modern science fiction, out of nothing but practical exchanges: a repaired generator, a watched sleep, a melted tape measure, an octave drop in the alien’s voice when he finally says, “Original crew was twenty-three. Now is only me.” The decisive character choice is that Rocky is not a scientist. He is an engineer, a repairer, the man who kept the engines running while his scientists died, and he carries the guilt of it. Grace has the theory and Rocky has the hands, so neither is decoration for the other; the friendship is a working partnership before it is anything else. When Rocky crosses into an oxygen atmosphere that sets his body on fire to pull a crushed Grace out from under a chair, the scene lands because two hundred pages of small favours have been laid under it like track.

What I admire most, on this reading, is how sceptical the book is of its own hero’s competence. Weir has a reputation for competence porn, and the reputation is out of date. Grace’s cleverest act, breeding a nitrogen-resistant strain of the Astrophage-eating amoeba by directed evolution, is also the novel’s second catastrophe, because evolution optimised for something he did not think to measure: in a xenonite tank flooded with nitrogen, the winning strategy was to hide inside the walls, so he unknowingly bred a bug that walks through the alien super-material, through his friend’s fuel tanks, through everything both species had built their survival on. His own verdict is the most honest sentence in the book: “I took a life-form I knew nothing about and used technology I didn’t understand to modify it.” The earlier fuel-tank infestation traces to his own unsealed lab; the hull melts at Adrian because he mutes a temperature warning twice. Mary Robinette Kowal observed that a good many of Grace’s disasters would have been prevented by common sense and checklists, and she is right, but I read that as the book’s argument rather than its flaw: this is a novel about a competent man whose competence keeps writing cheques his humility has to cover. The instrument-grade lesson, the one this site’s own benches exist to enforce, is that the universe grades your assumptions, not your intentions.

The complaints, because a signed review owes them. The central premise is one enormous cheat, and its size is only emphasised by the rigour everywhere else; you either sign the waiver on page fifty or you put the book down. The amnesia is medically convenient, erasing exactly the narrator’s identity while sparing his physics, his lab technique and his sense of humour, and lifting in narratively useful order. The prose is a single register, chatty, exclamatory, joke-cushioned, and across nearly five hundred pages that register can flatten; Weir writes wonder better than he writes dread. The human institutions are tissue: every government agrees, every navy obeys, a treaty granting one woman immunity from all prosecution on Earth is ratified offstage between chapters. And outside the central trio the characters are a nationality plus a specialism plus one trait, with the women thinnest of all; Stratt excepted, they exist to deliver information and leave. None of this sinks the book. All of it marks the boundary of what Weir is interested in, which is not people in groups. It is minds against problems.

Stratt herself is the book’s unresolved argument, and I think the irresolution is deliberate. She frees a convicted killer because his patent scales, orders fusion bombs buried under Antarctica to blanket the planet in methane, and drugs a man onto a suicide mission, and the novel gives her chapter 26 to make her case: fifty thousand years of human civilisation were about food, the famine arithmetic is calories divided by fifteen hundred, and the four horsemen are not a metaphor but a forecast. She is never punished, never vindicated, never revisited. But the book does answer her, quietly, in structure. Every decisive thing that saves the two worlds, the gifted fuel, the walk into fire, the turn-around, is a voluntary act between two individuals that no authority ordered and no authority could have. Stratt’s coercion got the ship to Tau Ceti. It could not have made anyone turn it back around.

And the turn-around is the ending’s whole meaning. With the beetles launched toward Earth carrying the cure, Grace runs the arithmetic on his food and faces the choice the amnesia had hidden from him the first time: go home a hero, or go back for the derelict friend and starve somewhere past 40 Eridani. The coward of chapter 23 chooses in about six weeks, and the book has the discipline not to congratulate him. It also has the nerve to solve his starvation with its own biology rather than a miracle, and then to withhold the one thing every rescue story owes its hero: the news. Sixteen years pass on Erid, in a dome, on a diet that gives him scurvy and beriberi, with no way to know whether the beetles arrived, because information travels at the speed of light no matter how much you care. When the answer finally comes, it comes as an astronomical measurement relayed by an alien: “Your star has returned to full luminance.” I finished the book the first time thinking this was the finest ending Weir would ever write. I finish it now noticing what the last scene actually is. A man with a cane walks into a room of thirty alien children, sits at a keyboard built to carry tone and inflection, and asks who can tell him the speed of light. Twelve kids raise their claws. The novel that begins with a teacher refusing to die for the children of Earth ends with the same teacher, on the wrong planet, back at the only job he ever wanted. That is the arc, and the extinction plot was scaffolding for it.

A word on why this novel is on this site at all, since the same honesty applies here as applied to Annihilation: this is fiction, it is evidence of nothing, and it would be diminished by pretending otherwise. But the material this station works with every week is claims about visitors, and Project Hail Mary is the rare piece of contact fiction built on the epistemics we actually endorse. Its aliens are peers, not gods; Rocky states the premise himself, that both species sit in the same narrow band, able to build a starship and unable to solve their own crisis. Its panspermia is a hypothesis argued from mitochondria, not a revelation. Its first contact runs entirely on the one channel two minds must share, which is physics, and its best line of dialogue is a research methodology in four words: “Discrepancy is science.” Our instruments price claims by running the numbers the claimants never ran; this is a novel where running the numbers is the plot, where the numbers keep coming back wrong, and where the honest response to a wrong number is written on nearly every page. Read it for the tennis balls in the jungle and the aluminium panel. Keep it for the fist bump through a wall neither of them can ever cross.
