American artist and psychic who originated Coordinate Remote Viewing at SRI. Wrote to Hal Puthoff after seeing Puthoff’s research proposal at Cleve Backster’s laboratory, Puthoff recalls.

The magnetometer visit

On his visit to SRI in June 1972, Swann was taken to a shielded magnetometer used in a quark experiment in Stanford University’s physics department. Puthoff writes that he “appeared to perturb the operation of the magnetometer” and then drew “a reasonable facsimile” of its construction, a feat that “impressed me perhaps even more than the former”. CIA project officer Kenneth Kress describes the same visit without naming Swann; the CIA’s first payments that year were $874, then $2,500, then a $50,000 contract.

Notable RV

  • Jupiter Ring RV: in an April 1973 session, before the Pioneer 10 flyby, described crystals high in Jupiter’s atmosphere, “maybe like rings of Saturn”; NASA dates the first evidence of a Jovian ring to Voyager 1 in 1979
