Granite contains quartz, and quartz is piezoelectric: mechanical stress across the crystal separates charge and produces a voltage. The effect is real and is the basis of everything from crystal oscillators to sonar transducers, and it is the same family of behaviour as the Electret and Bismuth Titanate entries in this vault. Christopher Dunn puts the King’s Chamber’s Aswan granite at fifty-five percent or more quartz and makes the room a transducer converting building vibration into electricity; the same property carries his ultrasonic reading in Ancient Machining, where quartz in the granite is said to vibrate in sympathy with the tool and so be cut faster than the softer feldspar around it. The open question is quantity rather than existence. Grains in bulk granite are randomly oriented, so their piezoelectric moments largely cancel, and no coupling efficiency, charge yield or output figure has ever been offered for the chamber.
