The Vanishing Literature
Nick Cook's book rests on a bibliography: gravity control discussed by name-brand executives in 1956, then total trade silence by 1960, read as the sign of a program going dark. This bench performs the check the claim never got: it draws the entire documented conversation, all thirty dated items of it, one square per document, and then interrogates the shape. The peak is 1955, not 1956, and the famous 1956 reports are one publisher consolidating its own newsletter, which had already stopped. The technical verdict, electric wind at 0.3% efficiency, was filed 38 months BEFORE the boom's first front page. The decay has a stated cause in print by 1961, in a headline: practical anti-gravity still far off. Through the entire silence, Townsend Brown's patents publish openly, and the word antigravity hits its 1950s book-corpus maximum. Then the bench runs the controls: nuclear aircraft died with a public price tag, variable sweep went quiet and came back as the F-111, and the two confirmed secrecy blackouts, fission and stealth, both end the same way, in an explosion of print at the reveal. Fission returned in five years; stealth in ten. This curve has had 68, and no explosion has come. Whether that means the tide went out or the door never reopened is the one thing the bench will not decide for you.

The Window is the census: every documented item of the 1952-1961 electrogravitics conversation, one square per document, quarterly, colored by source class with each class on its own toggle. The landmarks are flagged: the ONR verdict, the Herald Tribune front page, the newsletter's last item, the last article of the boom, and the silence with its single 1961 postscript. The Controls runs the era's other hot words from the book corpus in three modes: a fates grid (each panel carrying its documented chronology and a stated fate label), a decay race that aligns every word at its own 1950s peak and enters this bench's own ledger as a runner, and the secrecy signatures: fission's documented dip-and-explosion, stealth's zero-then-step, and radar, the counterexample that never dipped.
The Scope asks what actually vanished, with three instruments on one time axis: the trade ledger (which zeroes), the book corpus (where antigravity peaks in 1958, inside the silence, and never dies), and the Patent Office (which logs fourteen more Townsend Brown events through 1970). A strip along the bottom runs the technical term to 2019: its all-time peak is 2008, an order of magnitude above the 1950s.
The File hangs twelve cards: the claim verbatim, the census's method, the death certificate, the one-publisher loop, the wrong peak, the tail, the patent estate, the missing-paper ledger, the money trail, the Avro control, the secrecy signatures, and the revival. Two verdicts hang below at equal size.
Why it's here
The station's review of The Hunt for Zero Point records that book's central argument: not a sighting but a bibliography. In 1955-56, named American aerospace executives talked about cancelling gravity in print; by 1960 the trade conversation had gone completely silent. Cook reads the silence on the fission playbook: the talk stopped because the thing got real. This bench does not rerun his argument; it lays his evidence itself on the table: how big that conversation actually was, when it really peaked, who was doing the talking, and what kind of quiet followed. The answers are drawn entirely as dated, cited items: thirty documents, one screen; the peak in 1955, not 1956; 73.9% of the 1954-56 corpus the output of one London newsletter whose stream stopped before the famous year began; and Townsend Brown's own patents publishing openly to 1970. The famous 1956 report's evidence appendix is fifteen clippings of its publisher's own newsletter.
It is also the station's sixth statistics bench, after INST-37 Project Stargate (what a margin is worth against chance), INST-50 Special Report No. 14 (what a percentage is worth when the denominator moves), INST-60 The Nuclear Lure (what a correlation is worth against a base rate), INST-68 The Wave Schedule (what a rhythm is worth against a null) and INST-69 The Law of the Times (what a division is worth against its denominator): this one asks what a silence is worth against its own paperwork. The controls run the null exactly as specified on the board: nuclear aircraft, ramjet, variable sweep, testing whether hot-then-zero is just what buzzwords do; plus a wing the board did not order: the two documented secrecy signatures, fission and stealth, and radar, the honest counterexample. Two verdicts hang at equal size in the file, and the dials are yours.
How it works
Everything on the bench is either a dated document or arithmetic on dated documents: the ledger census, the published patent dates, the Ngram arrays with their raw responses archived, and the control chronologies. A script that ships with the site re-derives every displayed number before the build is allowed to pass, including the two the whole bench turns on: the 1955 peak and the 73.9% share.

The ledger is a census, not a sample, and its zero is a hostile-witness zero. The corpus was assembled from the sources that spent three decades hunting for more of it: Cook's decade of archive work, LaViolette's chase to the single Wright-Patterson copy, Valone's reprint of everything findable. Any item this bench is missing is an item those searchers also missed. The bench states what it cannot claim (a full-text sweep) and draws what it can: every square is checkable.
The bench dates before it argues. Drawn as dated, the corpus rearranges the standard story: the newsletter campaign starts in August 1954 and is over by December 1955; the national-press moment is November 1955; the famous 1956 items are consolidations. The claim's own chronology (a 1956 boom silenced by 1957-60) is off by a year at each end, and every downstream argument inherits the correction.
The controls are matched to the claim's own logic. Cook's template is the fission blackout, so the bench draws the fission blackout: it is real, visible even in the blunt book corpus, and it ends in a ×5.4 explosion at the reveal. Stealth, the modern instance from Cook's own beat, ends the same way. The template's second half is the test the electrogravitics curve has failed for 68 years, and radar is kept on the bench as the honest reminder that secrecy is not one shape.
The uncertainty that matters is stated, not hidden. The Ngram lane is a proxy with a noise floor, and the bench reads it for shapes and zeros, not decimals. The one-publisher share survives its own worst case: count the two 1956 reports as independent and it is still 65%. The missing-paper ledger, the strongest material for the classified reading, is itemized and never summed, because absences cannot be weighed.
What survives every dial is worth stating: the trade silence is real, and Cook reports it accurately; the conversation that fell silent was far smaller and earlier-peaked than its legend; the technical verdict preceded the boom; and the signature that every confirmed classified technology eventually printed has not appeared. Whether the residue is a door still closed or a tide long out is the reading the bench leaves to you.
The dials that decide what happens
One granularity switch, five class toggles, three control modes. Between them they assemble and disassemble the most famous silence in the antigravity literature, which is the exhibit.
- Quarterly or yearly. Quarterly shows the shape (the 1954 burst, the five-month gap, the December 1955 stop); yearly shows the count that moves the peak to 1955.
- The Aviation Studies toggle. The single most consequential control on the bench: switch the amber class off and the famous boom shrinks to ten articles and two government papers.
- The press toggle. What the conversation looks like from outside the loop: three front pages, two features, a three-item tail, one postscript.
- The patents toggle. The lane that never goes quiet: three filings in one day in 1957, grants printing to 1970.
- The control modes. Fates for the documented endings, the decay race for the null hypothesis with this bench's own corpus as a runner, secrecy for the fission and stealth signatures with radar at full size.
- The labels toggle. The landmark flags and annotations, for reading the raw shape clean.
The claims, as they stand
