LUSTY, from Luftwaffe Secret Technology, the United States Army Air Forces operation to locate, seize and exploit German aeronautical research at the end of the Second World War. Its files are held by the Air Force History Office and are open. They include a September 1945 memorandum closing the investigation into the WWII Foo Fighters “with negative result,” sitting alongside target reports on genuine German work on engine-interference weapons and antiaircraft rays.
The Hunt for Zero Point treats LUSTY as the point where its search changed institutions: the records are real and checkable, but by 1945 the Reich’s exotic programmes no longer belonged to the Luftwaffe, having passed to the SS under Hans Kammler. LUSTY is therefore, on Cook’s reading, a complete survey of the wrong organisation.
