A BAASS project on reported events at military bases holding nuclear weapons, followed across the BAASS records of PURSUE Release 07. The December 2008 plan (BAASS Project Management Plan 2008) lists it as concerning cases of the 1960s and 1970s at such bases.
The April 2009 report (BAASS Monthly Reports 2009) opens it as a living document on events of September to November 1975 at U.S. military facilities, often reported as helicopter sightings, most of them at Malmstrom, Wurtsmith and Loring Air Force Bases. It recounts that at Wurtsmith, Michigan, on 30 October 1975, ground personnel reported an airborne unidentified near the perimeter, and an aircraft tasked on radar confirmation is reported to have made contact over Lake Huron; at Loring, Maine, a helicopter crew could not see the object ground personnel reported. Six satellite map attachments and a plan for witness lists, interviews and possible Freedom of Information requests follow.
By June 2009 the team, formed in late April, covered Minot, Loring, Malmstrom and Wurtsmith. Guidance of 11 June called Northern Tier one of the sponsor’s top priorities and set the end game as a comprehensive analysis for the sponsor, a “One Stop Shop”. For Minot the writer took the earliest report, dated 1956, for a misdated 1968 event, traced 30 potential witnesses from an online roster of 94 personnel and interviewed 5 by telephone; the summary does not say whether that event is the one in this wiki’s Minot AFB 1968 entry. For Loring, fifteen witnesses of sightings of 27 to 31 October 1975 yielded 7,428 possible individuals in online sources, narrowed to 588, though the breakdown that follows adds up to 590.
In November 2009 BAASS listed Northern Tier among projects on hold because it did not have the Need to Know. Its capability report of November 2010 still refers to incidents of the 1960s and 1970s along the so called Northern Tier of the United States, over military sites (BAASS Capabilities Report 2010).
